Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has tasked Roads and Urban Development Ministry with accelerating the construction of a project extending Iran’s railway to Iraqi city of Basra.

The project is aimed at facilitating the visits paid by Iranian pilgrims to Iraqi holy sites will be extended from Iranian southwestern city of Khoramashahr to Iraqi border city of Basra, Mehr news agency reported.

According to the report, President Rouhani issued the order during a cabinet session on December 6.

About two million Iranians visited Iraqi Shia holy cities over the past two weeks to attend the mourning ceremonies marking the death anniversary of a shia imam.

Planning to increase the volume of goods transited via Iran, the country’s officials hold several meetings with neighboring countries of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Turkey, and Pakistan over the past year.

Statistics released in August suggested that over 4.35 million ton of goods were transited through Iran in the first four months of the current calendar year (March 21 – July 22). About 2.206 million tons of the transited goods were oil products and the rest were non-oil products.
