Baku, Azerbaijan, June 20
By Fatih Karimov – Trend:
A chicken farm in the Iranian eastern province of South Khorasan destroyed all its chickens after bird flu cases were reported in the region, said Mohammad Yousefi, the secretary of the association of Iranian chicken farmers.
He added that the disease was brought to the region by strong winds from Pakistan, Iran’s Tasnim news agency reported on June 20.
However, the Veterinary Organization is supervising the situation and will prevent the spread of the disease on to the markets, Yousefi said.
He went on to say that bird flu cases have also been reported from some farms in the northern province of Mazandaran.
On June 15, the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) reported an outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu virus among backyard chickens in a village in the north of the country.
Based on the report, the outbreak in Nogardan in Mazandaran province started on June 12. The virus killed 17 out of 25 susceptible birds at the location, and the remaining eight were destroyed, the OIE said in a statement, citing information from Iran's agriculture ministry.
